Ever wished you could experience your favourite brew all day, every day, even after you’ve finished the last pint of the evening? You’re not alone. Certain beer lovers out there are nothing if not creative, so as a top alcohol distributor in Malta, our team at Birra Biss have taken it upon ourselves to compile a few surprising ways of how you can use beer.

1. Fertiliser

Calling all tree huggers! Many of you might be surprised to learn that beer is a key ingredient in many DIY fertiliser recipes. It’s a great source of energy for microbes in the soil, as it is rich in carbohydrates, leading to lush, healthy grass for your lawn or garden. Beer is often mixed with ammonia, soft drinks, Epsom salts and other sweet ingredients to create an extraordinarily effective plant potion!

2. Shampoo

Forget all about the dry shampoo craze – beer is where it’s at! All you need to do is remove the alcohol content to avoid drying out the hair. Simply bring it to boil in a saucepan over medium heat, and let it dissolve until you can measure out ¼ of a cup. After the beer has cooled, mix it in with your favourite shampoo, then wash and rinse as usual. Enjoy shiny and lustrous hair, along with the flabbergasted looks on your friends’ faces when you share the recipe!

3. Jam

You’re not ready for this beer jelly! Grab 3 bottles of your favourite stout beer, a package of low sugar jelly pectin, ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar and 2 ½ cups of sugar. Boil the beer and vinegar together in a large pot; in the meantime, mix the pectin and ½ of sugar in a small bowl. Stir the latter mixture slowly into the pot, and add 2 cups of sugar, allowing the mixture to start boiling again. After it’s boiled for about 2 minutes, you can turn off the heat and spoon the resulting jam-like substance into hot, sterilised jars. Allow the jam to process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes. Bon appetit!

4. Bubble Bath

Sink into a bottle of bubbly with your favourite brew. Beer is full of health benefits, mostly due to the flowers of the hops plants that are added to balance flavour. They’re good for our muscles and bones, and are very rich in B vitamins. While the bath water is running, just add some olive oil, castile soap and some beer, adjusting the amounts to your own preferences.
